Information

 Professor EL Hassan graduated at the Kitchener School of Medicine in 1955 with distinctions in Medicine and Surgery and was awarded the Kitchener Memorial Prize for the best graduate. After House Officer jobs in Khartoum and Omdurman, he worked briefly as a medical officer in the Northern State and Khartoum.  He joined the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum as a Research Assistant in 1957. From 1960 to 1964 he trained at the University of London and University of Edinburgh and obtained a Diploma in Clinical Pathology from the University of London and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Edinburgh. He obtained his fellowship of the Royal Society of Pathologists in 1964 and the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Physicians in 1974.

Prof. El Hassan was promoted to Lecturer in 1962, Senior Lecturer in 1965 and Professor in 1966. He held several posts: Head Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, Dean Faculty of Medicine and theDeputy Vice Chancellor University of Khartoum. He was the First Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Sudan. While at the University of Khartoum, he was also President of the Medical Research Council and Director of the Tropical Diseases Institute of the National Council for Research, Sudan.  He was also the President of the Philosophical Society of the Sudan. During the same period, he established the Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology as a joint venture between the University of Khartoum and the Sudanese Ministry of Health. With the late Professor Sayed Daoud, he established the First Sudanese Cancer Registry in the 1960’s. Since 2005 he established the Sudanese National Academy of Sciences and is its President.

He worked for nine years in King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia where he helped in the establishment of the Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences of King Faisal University and was Director of Research, Publications and Translations. After returning from Saudi Arabia, he re-joined the University of Khartoum and established the Institute of Endemic Diseases where he was the first director.

Prof. El Hassan was visiting Professor at the University of London, University of Copenhagen and October the 6th University, Cairo. He was a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Eastern Mediterranean Regional office for the World Health Organization and amember of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of TDR, Geneva.

Prof. El Hassan received several awards: El Nelein Order of Merit, and State of the Sudan Golden Medal for Excellence and the Promotion of Scientific Innovation in Medicine in 2001, Sudan, Shousha Prize; WHO; Donald Mackay Prize of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine, London and Honorary DSC Ahfad University for Women. Recently a Centre for Tropical Medicine bearing his name was established in Gedarif State.

The main thrust of his research is in the field of Leishmaniasis, Mycetoma, Cancer and Population Genetics. He has more than 300 publications to his credit. Throughout his career, he trained many students to the level of MSc and PHD.
