A team from the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) has attended the 11th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH) held at ACC Liverpool venue in Liverpool, United Kingdom from September 16-20, 2019.
As a sideline event at the conference, a talk was held by Dr Sahar, Head of Research at the MRC and Dr Borna Nyaoke, Clinical Trial Manager at Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) Africa, presenting their experiences working on the first clinical trial on mycetoma to find a better treatment for patients in Sudan.
Dr Bakhiet and Dr Nyaoke were also interviewed by The Telegraph to reflect their work in current clinical trial which offers a potential effective cure for mycetoma. On a separate session on September 20, an update on new evidence, approaches and tools for mycetoma management was held with our director, Prof Ahmed Fahal and Prof Roderick Hay,Professor of Cutaneous Infection, as the chairpersons.
The presentations in that session included displaying a holistic approach to mycetoma management based on MRC experience and the molecular techniques for identification of mycetoma causative organisms as part of the research done in Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC), Netherlands and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA. Additionally, two presentations discussing the integrated management of neglected tropical diseases of the skin including mycetoma were given by Prof Hay and Dr Kingsley Asiedu, Medical Officer at WHO Department of NTDs. Lastly, Prof Matthew Todd, Professor of Drug Discovery at University College London, presented MycetOS which is an open, inclusive and collaborative network to find new potential treatments for fungal mycetoma.
